Latex-Safe Environment

A latex-safe environment is defined as an environment that minimizes the risk of a reaction occurring in individuals sensitized to natural rubber latex.

Latex is a common allergen and can cause severe reactions to patients, visitors and employees. Therefore, we are requesting that products containing latex not be brought into the facilities of Brookings Health System, including the hospital and Brookview Manor.

Natural rubber latex is found in more than 40,000 commonly used products in health care, schools, communities and homes. Examples of these products include gloves, balloons, bandages, tourniquets, dishwashing gloves, elastic. Symptoms of latex allergy may include skin redness, itching, hives, runny nose, sneezing, rhinitis, nasal congestion, and asthma.

Latex particles become airborne when a product containing latex is opened, popped, or snapped. In order to avoid the potential exposure of latex to someone who is allergic to latex, mylar balloons are a safe alternative.
